There is a trend, which is causing the major rivers in the United States to have hotter temperatures. When snow pack steadily declines as it has for about a decade and a half there is less water, when means it heats up faster because there is no cool water on the bottom as the depth is lessened. Additionally the water is coming from rain, not melting ice, which of course would be by definition just above freezing as it melts and floats into the rivers.
Many of the United States? largest rivers flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico already has higher temperatures due to its shallow depth in many places. A recent study done by the government has been confirmed this. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) indicated that this combination of the warmer rivers and the Gulf of Mexico is causing much of the shoreline waters in the Gulf of Mexico to heat up. Of course this is only one contributing factor but the waters near the shore have been seen to be up to 90 degrees and it goes down a couple of degrees every 30 or so miles. Yet the temperature of the Gulf of Mexico is hovering at about 83-86 degrees on average and much hotter than the Atlantic.
What does this mean to all of us? It means we have a problem with the potential of Super Storm Category Five Hurricanes like Katrina and Rita forming and that is horrific news for our civilization. Quite certain that anyone who has lost everything during either of these two past storms will agree.
What does this mean for next year? Potentially the same as this year, perhaps a little worse, that means 2006 is going to be a difficult Hurricane Season and that any Hurricane which makes into the Gulf of Mexico has the potential of being a Mega Storm or Cat Five Hurricane. In the last five years the water temperature is 1.5 degrees hotter and could be cyclical, but it is also the hottest in 110 years.
These are all issues, which contribute to the hotter Gulf Waters which meteorologist call Jet A, meaning Jet Fuel, for Hurricanes. Think on these cycles and trends, they could be telling us something about our Planet.
